Protect runway at the start
Keep fixed costs low and delay commitments that are difficult to unwind. Free or flexible workspace, short supplier runs and simple software preserve the ability to change direction when customers teach you something.
Get paid for learning
Consulting, pre-sales, deposits and a manual first version can fund discovery. Charge early enough to learn whether the problem is valuable, not merely interesting. Cash from customers is stronger evidence than survey approval.
Manage cash, not just profit
Build a rolling cash forecast with realistic payment dates, VAT, tax, stock purchases and refunds. Review it weekly. A profitable business can still fail when cash leaves months before it returns.
Spend where it compounds
Prioritise product quality, customer access and systems that remove a proven bottleneck. Delay office prestige, oversized teams and broad marketing. Every recurring cost should have a clear job.
Keep financing as a choice
Bootstrapping does not mean refusing all capital forever. It means reaching decisions from a position of evidence. If outside finance later accelerates something already working, you can assess it against a credible alternative.
