Registered office addresses explained

A registered office is an official public contact point for a UK limited company. It is not automatically the same as where you work.

What the address is for

Companies House and other public bodies use the registered office for formal correspondence. It must be an appropriate physical address in the same UK jurisdiction where the company is registered, and someone should reliably bring official post to the company’s attention.

Understand what becomes public

The registered office appears on the public register. Using a home address can affect privacy. Directors also provide a service address for public correspondence and a residential address that is generally kept private, subject to legal rules.

Compare your options

You may use suitable business premises, an accountant’s address with permission, or a legitimate address service. Check mail handling, scanning, forwarding, contract length and what happens if the service ends.

Keep records current

Update Companies House promptly when the registered office changes and update stationery, website disclosures and other records where required. Missing official mail can have serious consequences.

Treat this as general guidance

Requirements change and circumstances differ. Check current Companies House and GOV.UK guidance or take professional advice before deciding. A workspace that includes a registered address should explain exactly what the service covers.
